About the role#
The Molten Metal Processing Quality Laboratory in Spokane is seeking a Co-Op for the summer 2027 term. This position lasts approximately 6-8 months and reports to the Quality Lab Manager. You will support daily laboratory testing, sample preparation, and material characterization to maintain melt-quality control and plant support.
What you'll do#
- Follow all safety rules, laboratory practices, chemical-handling requirements, and equipment operating procedures.
- Support routine testing and characterization requests, which may involve working with molten aluminum, ceramics, metals, chemicals, and power tools.
- Prepare samples for metallography by cutting, grinding, and polishing.
- Assist with optical microscopy and SEM/EDS metallographic examinations.
- Operate lab equipment including OES, XRD, and DSC.
- Maintain organized records, track samples, and summarize analytical data.
- Communicate progress, observations, and technical issues to lab personnel and staff.
What you'll need#
- Junior or senior standing in an engineering or science degree program, preferably in chemical engineering, materials science, or chemistry.
- Basic laboratory skills with a focus on safe work habits and data organization.
- Ability to work in a team, follow written procedures, and communicate clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Interest in laboratory testing, aluminum processing, or materials characterization.
- Preferred: Hands-on experience with sample preparation, microscopy, or analytical testing.
- Preferred: Experience working with standard procedures and test records.
Location & details#
- Location: Spokane Valley, Washington.
- Schedule: This is an on-site, full-time position.
- Compensation: Paid internship with a combined housing and relocation stipend available for eligible out-of-state candidates.
- Eligibility: You must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
