About the role#
The Tenants' Rights Unit in the Bronx offers a unique housing-litigation practice that addresses housing instability outside of standard eviction proceedings. Interns focus on organizing tenants, aggregating claims, and conducting outreach for complex affirmative litigation in state and federal courts. This role provides hands-on experience in substantive housing law, landlord-tenant litigation procedure, and out-of-court advocacy.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client interviews and provide advocacy to help resolve housing instability.
- Perform legal research and draft legal documents, including pleadings and motions.
- Assist with eviction-defense cases and litigation regarding repairs and tenant harassment.
- Observe or participate in client meetings, settlement negotiations, and court appearances.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in law school.
- Strong legal research and writing capabilities.
- Experience or interest in client advocacy.
- Spanish language fluency is strongly preferred.
