About the role#
The Tenants' Rights Unit at the New York Legal Assistance Group offers an internship focused on a non-Right-to-Counsel, housing-litigation practice. This role addresses housing instability through proactive measures, including tenant organizing and the aggregation of claims. Interns work alongside experienced attorneys on complex affirmative litigation in state and federal courts, as well as eviction-defense cases and cases involving repairs and tenant harassment in Bronx Housing Court. This position provides exposure to substantive housing law and the specific procedures of landlord-tenant litigation.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client interviews and participate in client meetings.
- Perform objective legal research and writing.
- Draft pleadings and initial versions of substantive motions.
- Assist with out-of-court advocacy to resolve housing instability and mitigate eviction risks.
- Observe or participate in advocacy calls with opposing counsel, settlement negotiations, and court appearances.
- Support ongoing litigation efforts as needed.
What you'll need#
- Must be a current law student.
- Strong writing skills.
- Ability to conduct legal research.
- Experience with client advocacy.
- Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
