About the role#
The Consumer Protection Unit at the New York Legal Assistance Group supports unrepresented litigants in consumer debt cases within New York City Civil Courts. This internship provides hands-on experience in consumer law, including the opportunity to represent clients in court, negotiate with opposing counsel, and argue before a judge under attorney supervision. This is an unpaid, full-time internship available for the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client intake and interviews.
- Perform legal research and writing under supervision.
- Draft demand letters, pleadings, and motion papers.
- Create legal self-help and reference materials.
- Assist with case management, including entering data into client databases, tracking retainers, and managing court files.
- Staff a legal intake phone line to address consumer law issues.
What you'll need#
- Must be a current law student.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Proficiency in client intake and interviewing.
- Ability to draft demand letters and pleadings.
- Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
