About the role#
The Consumer Protection Unit supports unrepresented litigants in consumer debt cases within New York City Civil Courts. Interns gain hands-on experience by assisting with case management, conducting client intakes, and supporting litigation efforts under the supervision of experienced attorneys. This position offers exposure to consumer law through direct client interaction and court appearances.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client intake interviews and assist with case management.
- Perform legal research and draft motion papers, demand letters, and pleadings.
- Create legal self-help and reference materials for clients.
- Represent clients in court and negotiate with opposing counsel under attorney supervision.
- Manage administrative tasks including data entry, tracking retainers, and maintaining court files.
- Staff a legal intake phone line to address emerging consumer law issues.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a law student.
- Proficiency in legal research, writing, and drafting pleadings.
- Strong skills in client interviewing and intake.
- Spanish language fluency is strongly preferred.
