About the role#
The Herbarium Digitization Intern will work with the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium to digitize specimens from South America. This is a 1000-hour, paid internship reporting to the Assistant Director of the Herbarium. You will contribute to a project focused on accelerating species discovery.
What you'll do#
- Barcode specimens and create new database records.
- Capture digital images of herbarium specimens.
- Transcribe specimen data from images into the database.
- Take part in occasional public outreach activities.
What you'll need#
- Coursework in Biology, museum studies, or library studies.
- Experience with imaging procedures.
- Familiarity with South American geography.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with herbarium procedures is preferred.
- Proficiency in reading Spanish is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Bronx, New York.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
- Compensation: $19 per hour.
- Physical requirements include standing at counter-height workspaces, reaching specimens up to 11 feet high using ladders, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
