About the role#
As an R&D Materials Engineer intern, you will work with technical teams to develop new ideas, materials, and processes for next-generation implants. You will collaborate with scientists and engineers to conduct benchtop testing, troubleshoot experimental setups, and analyze results. This role requires an adaptable approach to problem-solving and the ability to apply core technical skills to a wide range of engineering challenges.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to the development of next-generation microelectrode materials by partnering with the microfabrication team.
- Develop novel solutions for electrode-tissue interfaces to improve sensitivity and longevity.
- Perform materials characterization and surface chemistry experiments on candidate materials and components.
- Design and fabricate custom test fixtures to support new experiments.
- Execute established protocols and independently design new experiments as project needs evolve.
- Troubleshoot, iterate, and communicate findings clearly to the team.
What you'll need#
- Evidence of exceptional ability in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of academic or industry experience.
- Strong understanding of the scientific method and engineering first principles.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Experience with chemical handling and safe lab practices.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or other CAD software is preferred.
- Familiarity with surface characterization techniques such as contact angle, FTIR, XPS, or AFM is preferred.
- Experience with microscopy and electrochemistry is preferred.
