About the role#
NRDC's Environmental Health Department is seeking a graduate intern to join our Adaptation Division. Reporting to a Senior Advocate, you will support the Insurance for a FAIR Future initiative. This work focuses on addressing the property insurance affordability and availability crisis while using insurance as a mechanism to improve climate resilience and adaptation.
What you'll do#
- Conduct policy and literature research.
- Synthesize emerging research and state-level developments into accessible internal briefs.
- Support engagement with community organizations, consumer advocates, policymakers, and other stakeholders to ensure diverse perspectives inform our work.
- Contribute to external blogs, educational materials, and stakeholder events.
- Lead a primary project aligned with initiative goals.
- Draft policy analysis and prepare materials for stakeholder meetings.
- Provide recommendations identifying promising state-level policies and practices to maintain insurance access while reducing physical and financial risk.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a graduate program.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with research or data analysis.

- Previous experience with disaster insurance or financing investments in climate adaptation and risk reduction is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship with a $10,000 stipend.
- The role is based in either New York, NY, or Washington, DC.
- Interns follow a hybrid work model and are expected to be in the office 3 days per week.
- The program runs for 10 weeks during the summer of 2027.
