The Motown Museum seeks an undergraduate or graduate student to assist with the digitization of born-analog materials and the management of digital assets. Working within the Archives & Collections Department, this intern will report to the Digital Preservation Specialist to support the long-term preservation of museum records.
What you'll do#
- Digitization: Image flat materials such as photos, documents, and publications using a flatbed scanner, and capture 3D objects using a DSLR camera.
- Digital Preservation: Create preservation-grade files for long-term storage and access files for general reference, including light photo editing using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
- Data Management: Input metadata and records into collection management systems, specifically Qi and AirTable.
- Object Handling: Assist the department team with the physical movement of museum objects.
What you'll need#
- Current student or recent graduate in archival studies, library science, history, historic preservation, museum studies, anthropology, or a related field.
- Interest in archives, museums, and digital preservation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to learn specialized applications, including Qi, AirTable, Adobe Creative Suite, and Epson Scan.
- Preferred: Experience with FADGI standards, photography equipment, and archival collection management systems.
Location & details#
- Location: On-site in Detroit, Michigan.
- Duration: 125 hours over a 6-week period.
- Compensation: This is a paid internship with a total stipend of $2000.
