About the role#
MKS Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineering student for a 6-month co-op position within the Sensor Design group. You will support the team by building, testing, and analyzing new capacitance sensors and transducers. This role involves working directly with production to troubleshoot performance issues and designing custom test equipment.
What you'll do#
- Build new capacitance sensor designs in collaboration with production teams.
- Diagnose issues related to sensor performance.
- Perform mechanical and thermal analyses using SolidWorks or COMSOL FEA.
- Test sensors at both the capacitance and voltage transducer output levels.
- Analyze test data and write detailed reports.
- Design and troubleshoot test systems, including creating bespoke equipment through 3D printing and CNC milling.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor’s Degree program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD modeling and FEA analysis.
- Ability to process data using Microsoft Excel, Matlab, or Python.
- Experience with soldering electrical wiring and PCB components.
- Skills in electronics debugging, including capacitance, resistance, and continuity testing.
- Comfort using standard hand tools and test instrumentation like thermocouples, strain gauges, and infrared cameras.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design and heat transfer principles.
- Must be a US Person.

- Term: Winter 2027 (January 2027 to June 2027).
- Modality: On-site, full-time.
- Compensation: $23.00 to $31.00 per hour.
- Travel: Up to 10% travel may be required.
