About the role#
The Reality Labs Prototyping team creates physical hardware for XR and wearables research. We produce CNC-machined, 3D-printed, and molded parts in-house. We need a computer vision intern to bring perception into the lab. You will help catch defects, confirm parts match their CAD designs, and monitor machines to prevent crashes. You will work directly with manufacturing engineers, machinists, and software engineers on the shop floor.
What you'll do#
- Build and train models to detect anomalies and defects in machined and printed parts using camera images.
- Develop methods to match physical parts or 3D scans to source CAD models for verification.
- Prototype camera monitoring for CNC machines and 3D printers to detect setup errors, collisions, or failing prints.
- Deploy and maintain networked camera systems, including capture, storage, and data pipelines.
- Create tools to generate and augment training data, such as synthetic images rendered from CAD.
- Measure model performance on lab data and share findings with the team.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
- Experience with computer vision or deep learning through coursework, research, or projects.
- Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks like PyTorch.
- Experience with image processing libraries such as OpenCV.
- Intent to return to a degree program after the internship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the United States.
- Experience with 3D vision, such as point clouds, depth cameras, or aligning scans to CAD.
- Familiarity with network camera deployment, real-time model execution, or edge devices like NVIDIA Jetson.
- Experience generating synthetic training data using tools like Blender.
- Knowledge of anomaly detection techniques for limited datasets.
- Comfort working on a shop floor alongside machinists.
- Familiarity with CAD tools like Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or NX and 3D formats like STEP and STL.
Location & details#
- Location: Sunnyvale, California.
- Modality: On-site.
- Type: Full-time internship.
- Compensation: $6,688 to $11,880 per month.
