Sports Fall Intern

About the role#

The Charlotte Observer is seeking a full-time sports intern for the Fall 2026 term. This 10-week, paid position is designed to provide practical education and professional experience for aspiring journalists. Interns are treated as full-time reporters and work alongside editors and mentors to develop professional goals, solve problems, and refine their journalism skills. This role is open to juniors, seniors, and recent graduates from Journalism, Communications, or Media Studies programs.

What you'll do#

• Write stories and create engaging social media content for thousands of readers.
• Shoot photos and videos to accompany news coverage.
• Collaborate within a team environment to cover professional sports, including the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte FC, and NASCAR, as well as local college and high school athletics.
• Participate in ongoing mentorship to develop professional skills and build industry connections.

What you'll need#

• Solid news judgment, accuracy, and high ethical standards.
• Experience working at a college publication, either print or online.
• Curiosity and the ability to develop original story ideas.
• A collaborative work ethic and a strong desire to learn.
• Understanding of the professional use of social media in newsgathering and audience engagement.
• Ability to quickly learn the technology and tools used in newsgathering.

Location & details#

• This is an on-site, full-time position based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
• The internship typically begins in late August or early September.
• The schedule may include evening and weekend hours.
• A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
