About the role#
The Kansas City Star offers a robust internship program for students interested in reporting and visual journalism. This program provides hands-on experience in a professional newsroom, with many current staff members having started their careers as interns. Positions are available for the spring and summer terms.
What you'll do#
- Work as a reporter or visual journalist covering topics including legislative affairs, local government, breaking news, sports, and audience engagement.
- Produce news-related content to contribute directly to the newsroom.
- Engage with audiences through writing, multimedia materials, social campaigns, and newsletters.
- Participate actively in the internship program activities.
What you'll need#
- Current status as a top student in Journalism, Communications, English, Media Studies, or a related field.
- Ability to specify a preferred reporting topic and highlight specialized expertise, such as data reporting or audience engagement.
- Visual journalist applicants must provide samples of still photography and videography.
- Audience engagement applicants must provide writing or multimedia materials demonstrating their engagement skills.
- Note: Prospective sports interns must apply through the Sports Journalism Institute program.
