News Intern - Part-time

About the role#

The San Luis Obispo Tribune is seeking a part-time intern for a six-month position. This role focuses on business reporting, including covering restaurant, brewery, winery, and retail openings and closings, as well as occasional weekend breaking news. Interns will work independently while receiving guidance from experienced editors and reporters. This position is unpaid and does not offer sponsorship.

What you'll do#

• Write news stories and produce accompanying photography and video content.
• Monitor and mine various sources to generate story ideas.
• Learn SEO best practices and refine headline-writing skills.
• Engage with the audience by identifying topics that drive interest on social media.
• Collaborate with newsroom colleagues in a professional environment.

What you'll need#

• Ability to write quickly, accurately, and effectively.
• Strong news judgment and an instinctive grasp of audience engagement.
• Familiarity with shooting photos and video.
• An entrepreneurial spirit, high energy, and a strong sense of curiosity.
• An eagerness to learn, absorb feedback, and apply it to your work.
• Pursuing or holding a degree in Journalism, Communications, or Business Administration.
