As a Chemical Engineering intern or co-op, you will gain hands-on experience in a refinery environment by working alongside professionals who manage specific portions of the refining process. You will become familiar with process equipment fundamentals, build critical thinking skills, and learn how various engineering disciplines collaborate as a cohesive team. You will have the opportunity to expand your written and verbal presentation skills in a professional setting.
What you'll do#
Most interns and co-ops are placed within the following functional areas:
- Process / Technical Service Engineering: Work on projects in the Technical Services Department to apply classroom knowledge. Tasks may include developing and leading test runs to optimize operations, performing process engineering calculations for technology and equipment, and monitoring or making recommendations regarding catalysts and adsorbents.
- Operations Research Engineering: Develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models to optimize crude oil purchasing, production, and product scheduling. Typical tasks include validating production data, mass balancing, and developing graphical interfaces for refinery process units.
- Environmental Engineering: Engage in projects involving refinery-wide compliance. You will apply engineering principles to environmental projects and gain exposure to relevant laws. Tasks may include performing process calculations for Risk Management Plans, conducting physical surveys of process units, working on wastewater treatment plant projects, and participating in regulatory inspections.
- Products Control / Economics Engineering: Gain exposure to operations, blending, and refinery economics. You will learn how tank farms operate and how products are prepared for shipment. Tasks may include analyzing process flow data to identify equipment failures, updating gasoline blend information for audits, and developing applications to support operating decisions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree-seeking program majoring in Chemical Engineering.
- Strong academic performance.
- A valid driver's license.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Availability for multiple work terms is preferred.
