About the role#
As a Chemical Engineering intern or co-op, you will gain hands-on experience by working with professional teams responsible for specific portions of the refining process. You will become familiar with process equipment, build critical thinking skills, and learn how various engineering disciplines collaborate within a refinery. This role provides exposure to multiple areas of the plant, helping you develop a broad understanding of refinery operations while expanding your written and verbal presentation skills.
What you'll do#
Most interns and co-ops are placed into one of the following areas:
- Process / Technical Service Engineering: Work with a mentor on projects that apply classroom knowledge to the refining environment. Duties include developing and leading test runs to optimize operations, performing process engineering calculations, and monitoring catalysts and adsorbents.
- Operations Research Engineering: Assist in developing planning, blending, scheduling, and process models to optimize production and crude oil purchasing. Tasks include mass balancing, process modeling, and creating graphical interfaces for process units.
- Environmental Engineering: Support compliance projects across the refinery. You will apply engineering principles to environmental requirements, perform process calculations for Risk Management Plans, and conduct physical surveys of process units.
- Products Control / Economics Engineering: Gain insight into tank farm operations, product shipping, and refinery economics. Responsibilities include analyzing process flow data to identify capacity variances and updating information for blender waiver audits.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree-seeking program majoring in Chemical Engineering.
- Strong academic performance.
- A valid driver's license.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

- This is a full-time, paid, on-site position.
- Locations include: Findlay and Canton, Ohio; El Paso, San Antonio, and Texas City, Texas; Anacortes, Washington; Wilmington and Martinez, California; Canonsburg, Pennsylvania; Mandan, North Dakota; Salt Lake City, Utah; Robinson, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; St Paul Park, Minnesota; Catlettsburg, Kentucky; Garyville, Louisiana; and Kenai, Alaska.
- This role is for the Fall 2027 term.
