About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering intern or co-op at a Marathon refinery, you will work with teams of professionals to gain a practical understanding of the refining process. You will learn industry codes and best practices while building critical thinking skills. This role offers exposure to how different engineering disciplines work together. You may have the opportunity to work across multiple areas of the refinery to broaden your understanding of plant operations.
What you'll do#
Most interns and co-ops serve in one of two capacities:
- Area Refining Engineer/Project Engineer: You will develop project management skills by creating project scopes, estimates, and schedules. Once a project is approved, you will oversee the design effort and assist during construction.
- Reliability Engineer: You will support the Maintenance Department by designing and developing equipment improvements. This includes root cause failure analysis, optimizing maintenance programs for rotating equipment like pumps and compressors, and troubleshooting fixed equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree-seeking program majoring in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering.
- Strong academic performance.
- Authorization to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for visa sponsorship.
- A valid driver's license.
- Availability for multiple work terms is preferred.

This is a full-time, on-site, paid position for the Fall 2027 term. Openings are available at various refinery locations, including Findlay and Canton, Ohio; El Paso and Texas City, Texas; Anacortes, Washington; Wilmington and Martinez, California; Mandan, North Dakota; Salt Lake City, Utah; Robinson, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; St Paul Park, Minnesota; Catlettsburg, Kentucky; Garyville, Louisiana; and Kenai, Alaska.
