Materials Science Division Graduate Intern - Fall 2026

About the role#

The Materials Science Division is seeking graduate students or recent bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients for a Fall 2026 internship. This role provides practical research experience across a variety of scientific fields, including organic/inorganic synthesis, analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, materials characterization, actinide and optical materials, electrochemistry, and metallurgy.

What you'll do#

• Conduct research in an assigned area under limited direction and supervision.
• Perform technical assignments of basic complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientists.
• Collaborate with scientists on projects involving hands-on laboratory work, computation, or data analysis.
• Present findings through formal presentations or poster sessions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a graduate degree program or a recent graduate with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemistry, materials sciences, computational chemistry, or a related field.
• Demonstrated academic achievement and experience applying scientific principles to solve technical problems.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to present concepts and ideas.
• Proficiency with personal computers and software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

• Compensation: Paid position with a monthly salary range of $6,752 – $8,201, determined by academic standing.
