About the role#
The 1st STEP (School to Training & Employment Program) offers students a paid opportunity to gain professional experience at the Lansing Board of Water & Light. This program runs from January to May 2027 and provides exposure to various utility operations through direct mentorship. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a $2,000 scholarship for a college or university in Michigan.
What you'll do#
Students work 3 hours each weekday. You will learn workplace safety principles and participate in skilled trade or professional learning opportunities. Depending on your placement, you may provide support in areas such as Safety Technician, Power Plant, AMI, Supply Chain, PED, Maintenance Mechanic, Water Production, Customer Service, or IT.
What you'll need#
- You must be a high school senior as of January 2027.
- You must be at least 17 years old by January 1, 2027.
- A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required.
- You must have reliable transportation to and from work.
- You must pass a multi-stage screening process and mandatory drug testing.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary.
Location & details#
- This role is located in Lansing, Michigan.
- The position is on-site and requires availability for 3 hours every weekday from January through May 2027.
- Physical requirements may include sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and traversing uneven terrain. Work may occur in both office environments and outdoor field locations with exposure to varying temperatures, dust, and noise.
