About the role#
This internship is based in the Sales and Systems Engineering group within the Train Dynamics Systems division. You will work on the LEADER train control system, which covers fuel efficiency and train handling for railroads. You will report to the Manager of Sales and Systems Engineering and own specific deliverables across software, data analysis, and hardware components of the product.
What you'll do#
- Write and maintain automation scripts for engineering systems on Linux hosts.
- Extend the group's test automation harness and run regression campaigns across projects.
- Produce summary reports for pass, fail, and error results.
- Fix defects in internal tools, including issues with data accuracy and visualization.
- Deploy and configure engineering web applications and virtual machine environments.
- Prepare, image, and commission onboard LEADER hardware.
- Analyze recorded locomotive data to assist with incident investigations and performance reviews.
- Write design and hand-over documentation that meets internal review standards.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited Bachelor or Master of Science program in Systems, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- At least two years of your degree completed by the start of the term.
- Experience with at least one scripting or programming language, preferably Python.
- Proficiency with Unix or Linux environments and the command line.
- Ability to analyze data using Excel, Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite for documentation.
- A track record of completing assigned tasks and escalating issues when identified.
- Preferred: Coursework or projects in control systems, embedded systems, or signal processing.
- Preferred: Exposure to virtualization, web application deployment, or relational databases.
- Preferred: Familiarity with version control and continuous integration tools, specifically Perforce and Jenkins.
- Preferred: An interest in rail operations, train dynamics, or locomotive systems.
