About the role#
The Walk-in Case Management Services Intern will support the IRC walk-in team in Baltimore to facilitate the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees, and other humanitarian immigrants. This role involves direct interaction with clients and families to help them navigate essential services. Interns will gain exposure to public benefits in Maryland, local Baltimore resources, and holistic case management strategies.
What you'll do#
- Assist clients with activating EBT cards, applying for Social Security cards, and obtaining Maryland ID cards.
- Coordinate transportation for clients to medical and other required appointments.
- Conduct orientation sessions on financial topics, such as opening bank accounts and using public transportation.
- Maintain accurate service documentation through case notes and file management.
- Work both remotely and in-person to support daily walk-in operations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment or interest in fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Human Resources, Public Health, Political Science, International Relations, Communications, or Nursing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Fluency in English.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Prior experience working with refugees or immigrants and an interest in social work or case management is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Baltimore, Maryland.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 14, 2026, to December 18, 2026).
- Modality: Hybrid (requires at least 3 days per week in the office).
- Commitment: Minimum of 15 hours per week.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. A per diem of $15 per day is available to offset food and travel costs, and mileage reimbursement is provided for approved activities.
