About the role#
The Vocational ESL (VESL) Intern supports a community-based program designed to help adult students improve their English proficiency. This role focuses on providing students with the literacy, language, and confidence necessary to navigate daily life, increase self-sufficiency, and expand employment opportunities. You will work directly with adult learners from diverse backgrounds, including those with limited formal education.
What you'll do#
- Attend and observe classes every Tuesday and Thursday.
- Assist the VESL Instructor with class enrollment, coordination, and the implementation of daily activities.
- Prepare student materials and help integrate digital literacy into the classroom.
- Support registration appointments by assisting with assessments and data entry.
- Help navigate client barriers to education and connect students with appropriate local adult education services.
- Create a welcoming, supportive environment that fosters community and learning for all participants.
- Contact students to confirm class availability and provide classroom supervision when necessary.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, or a recent graduate. Preferred fields include English, Psychology, Communications, or Sociology.
- A strong interest in or experience with teaching, particularly ESL.
- Fluent in spoken and written English with effective communication skills suitable for a multicultural environment.
- Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity toward vulnerable populations.
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and environments with patience and flexibility.

- Location: Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Commitment: 10-15 hours per week.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
