This is an unpaid SkillBridge internship designed for transitioning active-duty U.S. military personnel. The program provides hands-on experience within the Sheet Metal Department at Newport News Shipbuilding. Interns receive formal and on-the-job training, including qualification through the shipyard's welding school, to prepare for potential full-time roles.
What you'll do#
- Train on meaningful projects while working closely with a mentor and senior leadership.
- Fabricate, assemble, and install components for aircraft carriers, submarines, and surface ships, including ventilation systems, bulkheads, furniture, ladders, and foundations.
- Perform tasks governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines.
- Operate various hand and power tools, such as drills, rivet guns, grinders, saws, plasma arc cutters, and CNC fabricators.
What you'll need#
- Must be active-duty military personnel within the final 180 days of service to participate, though applications are accepted within the final 12 months of service.
- Education and experience requirements are dependent on the specific Program of Instruction.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
