About the role#
The Construction Co-Op program at Higley Construction offers college students hands-on experience in both office and field settings. You will work alongside project managers, superintendents, and other professionals to learn how construction projects move from ideas to reality. This role is based in Detroit, Michigan, for the Summer 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Learn to interpret project design drawings and specifications.
- Document site progress through photographs.
- Maintain submittal logs and learn the approval process for building materials.
- Assist with the preparation and processing of Request for Information (RFI) logs.
- Collaborate on weekly meeting minutes for project stakeholders.
- Prepare daily reports summarizing site activities.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and quality walkthroughs.
- Review safety audits with the Superintendent and follow all safety procedures, including the use of required protective equipment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited degree program in civil engineering, construction management, or a related architectural or engineering field.
- A strong desire to learn about the construction industry and pursue a career in construction management.
- Excellent mathematical, problem-solving, and relationship management skills.
- Strong business writing and public presentation abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- Proficiency in or a willingness to learn construction software applications.
- Proactive and curious mindset with a focus on strategic problem-solving.

- Location: Detroit, Michigan.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Status: Full-time, paid position.
- Note: This role requires a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Ongoing random testing is part of company policy. The position involves physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, working at heights, and navigating various environmental conditions on job sites.
