About the role#
The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com are seeking journalists for a grant-funded environmental reporting fellowship. This one-year, full-time position places you on a three-person team alongside an award-winning reporter and another fellow. You will report to the environment editor to produce major projects, enterprise stories, and daily coverage. The focus is on Arizona environmental issues and broader U.S. West topics, including climate change, the Colorado River, air quality, and water conservation. Fellows also manage project-specific social media channels and produce content for the USA TODAY Network.
What you'll do#
- Gather information from sources at any location and through any available means.
- Interview subjects in person, by telephone, via computer, or in writing.
- Research written materials, graphics, photographs, and audio or video recordings.
- Travel as necessary to conduct research or interviews.
- Report information quickly and accurately for publication.
- Assist in the production of stories, videos, photographs, and graphics.
- Monitor news feeds for environmental topics and produce daily reported stories.
What you'll need#
- A high school diploma or equivalent and a college degree (graduate students are encouraged to apply).
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a strong command of AP writing, spelling, grammar, and style.
- Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to multi-task.
- Experience performing a variety of tasks under deadline pressure.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Preferred experience in environmental journalism or research, including knowledge of topics such as climate change, water management, or endangered species.
