About the role#
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern for CNC Machining, you will help develop and optimize CNC programs for complex metal components. You will work directly with our engineers and machinists to establish standards for our high-volume, vertically integrated workflow. You will gain hands-on experience on the production floor, using multi-axis machines to refine processes for quality and repeatability. You will also own a specific intern project from initial scoping through to final implementation and presentation.
What you'll do#
- Develop, implement, and optimize CNC programs for complex metal components and 3D printed parts.
- Support the programming, setup, and refinement of operations on multi-axis CNC machines, including DMG Mori and Siemens controls.
- Interpret CAD models, technical drawings, and GD&T specifications.
- Select and evaluate cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies.
- Troubleshoot CNC programming issues in collaboration with machinists and design engineers.
- Maintain CNC program libraries, tool databases, and process documentation.
- Collaborate with additive designers on custom workholding and process improvements.
- Support the design and deployment of automation solutions for quality control and production.
- Adhere to quality control processes, industry standards, and safety regulations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for mechanical or aerospace engineering at an ABET accredited university.
- Exposure to CNC programming and machining through labs, makerspaces, internships, or engineering clubs.
- Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Experience with MasterCAM or Hypermill is preferred.
- Experience with 5-axis machines and machining hard metals like titanium or Inconel.
- Familiarity with metal 3D printed parts, post-processing requirements, or machining castings and forgings.
- Experience with quality control tools such as CMM, micrometers, and thread gauges.
- Ability to work with power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Willingness to work extra hours when the project requires it.
Location & details#
