Hardware R&D Engineering Intern

About the role#

As a Hardware R&D Engineering Intern, you will join the Platform Technology team to research and develop next-generation 3D printing processes. This role involves working in a multidisciplinary environment alongside mechanical, systems, and software engineers to turn complex ideas into accurate, high-quality parts.

What you'll do#

• Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques, ranging from new printer architectures to control system refinements.
• Evaluate current printer performance to identify areas for improvement.
• Design and execute experiments, using the resulting data to inform and develop hardware or software enhancements.
• Collaborate across teams to implement product improvements, such as refining support structure algorithms.
• Tackle complex, open-ended problems that span multiple engineering disciplines.

What you'll need#

• Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Biomedical, or Industrial Engineering.
• Experience with experiment design and data analysis.
• Proficiency in programming and scientific computing, ideally using Python or Matlab.
• Familiarity with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping.
• Previous experience working on a consumer product.
• Ability to work autonomously and a willingness to challenge assumptions with data-backed research.
• A portfolio of previous engineering work or projects is required.

Location & details#

• Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 – December 18).
• Location: On-site in Somerville, Massachusetts.
• Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week).
• Compensation: Paid position, $1,575–$1,950 per week based on qualifications and experience.
