About the role#
This internship offers students the chance to work alongside experienced professionals in the Upstream and Global Operations departments. You will contribute to projects that drive business results while strengthening your professional capabilities. The role involves a mix of office-based engineering work and field-based observations, providing a practical understanding of water resources and geotechnical engineering within a mining environment.
What you'll do#
For Water Resources Engineering, you will combine analysis, planning, and design to support surface water infrastructure and management systems. Responsibilities include:
- Defining drainage catchments using engineering and mine planning software.
- Developing hydrologic models for watershed analysis using HEC-HMS.
- Evaluating water routing alternatives while considering operational requirements and regulatory obligations.
- Designing water management infrastructure, such as sumps, ditches, culverts, and discharge systems.
- Supporting troubleshooting of short-range challenges and defining long-term solutions.
- Assisting with water-related studies and reviewing recommendations.
For Geotechnical Engineering, you will support the design, monitoring, and performance assessment of earth structures. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting design and surveillance activities for tailings dykes, overburden disposal areas, roads, and pit walls.
- Completing slope stability assessments using geotechnical analysis software like Slope/W.
- Reviewing geotechnical instrumentation data to evaluate earth structure performance.
- Assisting with geotechnical investigations and technical reporting.
- Collaborating with construction and operations teams to evaluate field observations and construction deviations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or a related discipline.
- Availability for a work term beginning in January or May 2027, with a return to full-time studies afterward.
- Demonstrated leadership, strong academic performance, and a commitment to safety.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Preferred experience includes AutoCAD, Deswik, Microsoft Excel, HEC-HMS, and Slope/W, or relevant coursework in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, or watershed modelling.
Location & details#
- Locations: Calgary, Alberta or Kearl Site, Alberta.
- Terms: Winter 2027 or Summer 2027 start dates.
