About the role#
We are looking for a Lab Automation and AI Engineering Co-Op to join our team in Billerica, Massachusetts for the Winter 2027 term. This is a 6-month, hands-on opportunity to apply coding and AI skills to real laboratory challenges. You will work with scientists and lab managers to automate manual workflows, improve data handling, and prototype AI-assisted tools that increase lab efficiency.
What you'll do#
- Support the automation of lab workflows including data processing, QC review, and report generation.
- Develop and test Python scripts for data analysis, cleanup, and automation.
- Prototype and evaluate AI-assisted tools, such as large language models or AI agent frameworks, for lab applications.
- Connect instrument data to lab systems like LIMS to reduce manual handling of Excel and CSV files.
- Document workflows, assumptions, and usage instructions for the tools you build.
- Collaborate with lab staff to gather requirements and refine tools based on user feedback.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Coding ability in Python or similar languages for data analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with structured data formats like Excel, CSV, and databases.
- Exposure to AI tools, large language models, or AI agent frameworks.
- Experience with APIs, data pipelines, or workflow automation.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an interest in lab operations or analytical chemistry.
- Ability to work with non-technical users and communicate effectively.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site in Billerica, Massachusetts.
- You must be available to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, from January through June.
- You must be familiar with your university's requirements for participating in a co-op program.
- This is a paid position.
