About the role#
As a Nurse Extern at Encompass Health, you will assist the rehabilitation team in providing care to patients. This role allows nursing students to gain clinical experience while supporting patient recovery in an inpatient setting. You will work directly with nurses and therapists to monitor patient conditions and help with daily needs.
What you'll do#
- Assist patients with daily activities and body mechanics as delegated by the rehabilitation team.
- Communicate patient concerns and changes in condition to nurses or therapists.
- Obtain vital signs and record them in the electronic medical record.
- Document patient information in medical records.
- Perform procedures including the collection of urine, stool, and sputum samples.
- Review hygiene and treatment plans with patients and their families.
- Assist with patient feeding and participate in Therapeutic Dining Groups.
- Maintain a clean environment for patients and assist with equipment care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program with good academic standing.
- Successful completion of the first term of nursing courses, including fundamentals of nursing or an equivalent course.
- Ability to provide instructor evaluations showing satisfactory performance of fundamental nursing skills.
- BLS (CPR) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
- Commitment to providing proof of continued enrollment and passing grades each semester.
- Completion of a preceptor tool and core competency assessment at 90 days.
- One year of experience in an inpatient clinical setting is preferred.
