About the role#
DOWL is seeking a Transportation Design Intern for the summer of 2027 in Juneau, Alaska. This full-time, paid internship provides one-on-one mentorship to help you gain experience with design projects. You will work across various engineering disciplines to analyze, develop, and prepare design packages. This role involves both office-based tasks and intermittent field work.
What you'll do#
- Assist with field investigations, project design, and construction inspection.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design projects.
- Tabulate bid items and calculate construction quantities from plans and specifications to estimate costs.
- Provide AutoCAD drafting support.
- Prepare and route project correspondence and maintain records.
- Assist with writing and editing construction specifications and technical reports.
- Provide construction administration and inspection services.
- Perform data gathering in the field.
What you'll need#
- One to two years of college-level course work toward a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts including probability, statistical analysis, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals and instructions.
- Strong problem-solving skills to collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- A valid driver license is required.
- Prior work experience in construction or civil engineering is desirable.
- Knowledge of ARC GIS and AutoCAD Civil 3D is highly desirable.
