About the role#
The Wall Street Journal Visual Investigations internship is a 10-week summer program based in New York. This role is for college juniors or graduate students who will return to school in the fall. You will work alongside our data and visual investigations teams to produce journalism that reveals information through maps, video, satellite imagery, and interactive graphics.
What you'll do#
- Contribute reporting, data analysis, and visual verification to investigative projects.
- Work cross-functionally with reporters and editors across the newsroom.
- Scrape and mold unstructured data from websites.
- Review large datasets and dig through public records.
- Analyze satellite imagery and geolocate or chronolocate digital media.
- Pitch visual journalism projects including data-driven interactives and charts.
- Experiment with AI-powered reporting workflows.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a college junior or graduate student returning to school in the fall.
- Completion of at least one prior reporting internship or a portfolio of exceptional published work.
- An analytical approach to journalism.
- Proficiency in cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data.
- Ability to scrape and mold unstructured data using Python, R, and SQL.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to work independently under deadline pressure.
- Dedication to high journalistic standards.
- Familiarity with JavaScript, D3.js, 3D modeling, animation, video editing, and open-source reporting techniques is a bonus.

- Location: New York, New York (1211 Ave of the Americas).
- Term: Summer 2027 (10 weeks between June and August).
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: This is a paid internship.
