About the role#
The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is hiring for the Summer 2027 Racial Justice Internship Program. Interns work with various offices, including the Training Department and the Director of Equity and Inclusion. You will support our mission to provide zealous advocacy and community-oriented defense while protecting fundamental constitutional and human rights. This role involves working closely with managers, attorneys, investigators, and social service advocates to build racial justice capacity through litigation, policy advocacy, and education.
What you'll do#
- Perform legal research and writing.
- Conduct research on legal and policy issues related to racial justice.
- Collect, analyze, and present data.
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of race-based trainings.
- Provide support to attorneys and staff on matters of racial equity.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate, graduate, or law school student status.
- Commitment to racial and social justice and addressing systemic racism in the justice system.
- Availability for at least 8 weeks of full-time employment during the summer.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, legal research, and writing.
- Strong teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Access to a personal computer with home internet for remote work.
- Access to reliable transportation for travel to courts and investigation locations.
- Demonstrated commitment to zealous advocacy and the protection of human rights.
- Preferred: Coursework in evidence, criminal law, criminal procedure, constitutional law, critical legal theory, or trial advocacy.
- Preferred: Experience with data analysis and working with underrepresented groups, including low-income clients, immigrants, LGBT individuals, and those with mental health or substance abuse challenges.
