About the role#
The Respiratory Care Extern works under supervision to provide care for patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies. You will work alongside a Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LRT) to administer care based on physician prescriptions and hospital policies. This role requires setting priorities and meeting deadlines while maintaining your scope of practice. You will assist in both General Patient Care areas and Critical Care units depending on your level of training.
What you'll do#
- Assess patient respiratory status through physical assessment and medical record review.
- Perform routine procedures like oxygen delivery and medication administration.
- Assemble and check respiratory care equipment for malfunctions.
- Prepare equipment for procedures such as intubation.
- Assist with measurements and calculations to determine parameters for mechanical ventilation.
- Perform emergency and acute respiratory care procedures under supervision.
- Communicate patient care information to the healthcare team, families, and patients.
- Participate in department performance improvement activities.
- Manage your own professional development.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited Respiratory Care program with satisfactory progress.
- Completion of at least one year of schooling for General Patient Care areas.
- Enrollment in the final clinical semester for Critical Care areas.
- Current BLS certification.
- Successful completion of the respiratory care medication competency test.
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and medical equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to high-quality internal and external customer service.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring sustained concentration.
Location & details#
- Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
- Schedule: Variable 12-hour shifts, PRN.
- Employment Type: Part time.
