About the role#
The Liberty and National Security Program works to protect constitutional values and fundamental freedoms. We focus on limiting executive abuse of emergency powers and preventing government secrecy. Our team works to ensure counterterrorism authorities remain narrowly targeted while maintaining oversight and accountability.
What you'll do#
Interns work directly with our staff on policy advocacy, research, and litigation. You will contribute to programmatic and strategic planning. Specific tasks include:
- Conduct legal and policy research and analysis.
- Draft legislation for federal, state, and local levels.
- Assist with litigation in trial and appellate courts.
- Draft amicus briefs, policy reports, and other advocacy documents.
- Write communications for legislators and comments for federal agencies.
- Attend coalition meetings.
- Draft posts for the Brennan Center blog.
- Support administrative and legislative advocacy and public education.
What you'll need#
- You must be a law student in Spring 2027.
- Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.
- Ability to show initiative, imagination, and versatility.
- A clear interest in our issues.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site position at our Washington, DC office.
- The term runs during the Winter 2027 semester.
- The role requires approximately 10 to 15 hours per week.
- This position is paid at $20.90 per hour, subject to school internship policies.
