About the role#
Benchmark Space Systems is seeking a Propellant Chemistry Intern for the summer of 2027. You will work alongside engineers and chemists to design, build, and test technologies for in-space propulsion products. This role provides hands-on experience with propulsion engineering, propellant chemistry, and industry documentation standards. You will be paired with a mentor and work directly on technical projects.
What you'll do#
- Plan, develop, and execute chemical and mechanical tests.
- Set up experiments and prepare chemical solutions using standard analytical equipment.
- Maintain, clean, and repair laboratory instruments.
- Compile and interpret test results, and document findings in technical reports and charts.
- Design or fabricate experimental apparatus.
- Develop new chemical engineering processes or production techniques.
- Provide technical support to the broader team of chemists and engineers.
- Manage inventory and source new materials and tools.
- Maintain a safe work environment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Ability to qualify as a U.S. Person under U.S. export control laws.
- Experience handling chemicals and using analytical chemistry instruments.
- Hands-on lab experience with test and debugging equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and data acquisition systems.
- Ability to design and fabricate experimental apparatus.
- Strong written, visual, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship based on-site in Pleasanton, California.
- The term is for the summer of 2027.
- Compensation is $24 to $27 per hour.
- Housing assistance is available for out-of-state candidates.
- This role requires standing for long periods in a lab environment while working with hazardous chemicals.
