About the role#
Simulation helps us move fast, but it is only as accurate as the machine model underneath it. The Validation and Verification team measures how actuators and environments perform in the real world to ensure simulation and reality align. As an intern, you will lead black-box testing of hardware actuators to quantify and close the gap between our simulations and physical machine performance.
What you'll do#
- Develop and run black-box test plans to characterize actuator behavior on machines and test stands.
- Instrument hardware, configure data acquisition, and collect clean datasets.
- Characterize response behaviors like latency, deadband, hysteresis, and saturation, and track how these change with load, temperature, and wear.
- Compare real machine data against simulation output to identify and quantify divergences.
- Provide findings to the controls and simulation teams to support model improvements.
- Automate test execution and reporting to make these processes routine.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, computer science, electrical, aerospace, or robotics engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- A working understanding of controls or system identification fundamentals.
- Proficiency in Python for analysis and automation.
- Hands-on experience with sensors, DAQ, or test benches.
- A willingness to work in the field on machines while wearing PPE.
- Familiarity with ROS or comparable robotics middleware.
- Exposure to hydraulics or heavy equipment is a plus.
- Experience with robotics simulators like Isaac, MuJoCo, or Gazebo.
