    About the role#

As a Sensor Systems intern, you will own the sensor selection and placement analysis for a new machine platform. You will move from initial trade studies through to validation on the actual machine. This role sits at the intersection of sensor physics, autonomy systems architecture, and mechanical design.

    What you'll do#

    • Analyze sensor coverage, occlusion, and blind spots for candidate sensor suites on new machine types.
    • Build or extend tooling that models field of view, range, and coverage geometry.
    • Run trade studies weighing performance against cost, durability, and mounting constraints.
    • Prototype mounting concepts and validate coverage assumptions on actual machines.
    • Turn your analysis into sensor requirements and specifications for the hardware team.
    • Work across perception, hardware, and safety teams to ensure the suite meets downstream needs.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, electrical, physics, mechatronics, robotics, computer science, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
    • Solid grasp of 3D geometry, coordinate frames, and transforms.
    • Proficiency in Python for analysis and tooling.
    • CAD fluency to reason about physical hardware placement.
    • Willingness to visit mock construction sites to test sensor configurations.
    • Experience with device physics, ray tracing, rendering, or coverage simulation is preferred.
    • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle sensor suites or heavy off-road machinery is a plus.

    Location & details#

    • Location: San Francisco, California.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Employment: Full-time internship.
    • Term: Rolling.
