About the role#
Beam Therapeutics is seeking a co-op student to join the mRNA Science team for the Winter 2027 term. This role focuses on screening mRNA sequences and chemical modifications to improve mRNA quality for various research programs. You will work on optimizing in vitro transcription reactions and performing biochemical assays to characterize mRNA products. This position provides exposure to molecular biology and cell-based techniques while working alongside our research teams.
What you'll do#
- Maintain and culture mammalian cell lines for mRNA expression studies.
- Perform transfection experiments to evaluate mRNA constructs.
- Conduct protein expression and biochemical assays to characterize mRNA performance.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results.
- Process multiple samples with attention to accuracy, consistency, and documentation.
- Collaborate with other teams to support cell-based editing and mRNA evaluation studies.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments in the ELN system.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements and procedures.
- Contribute to molecular cloning, DNA preparation, and in vitro transcription experiments.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a BS or MS degree program in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
- At least one year of hands-on laboratory experience.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique.
- Experience with mammalian cell transfection and cell-based assays.
- Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and data analysis.
- Ability to maintain a laboratory notebook and follow written protocols.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform repetitive experimental workflows with consistency.
- Experience with molecular cloning, plasmid DNA preparation, and in vitro transcription is preferred.
- Familiarity with mRNA biology, gene expression studies, or nucleic acid therapeutics is a plus.
