As a State and Local Tax (SALT) Intern, you will work alongside experienced tax professionals to gain hands-on experience in tax compliance and consulting. This role involves performing research, analyzing tax issues, and utilizing tax software to support client service teams. You will have the opportunity to apply your educational background to real-world scenarios, receive coaching from senior team members, and begin building professional relationships within the firm.
What you'll do#
- Complete basic research on federal and state tax issues.
- Ensure client compliance with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Participate in the preparation, filing, and completion of voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
- Assist in drafting responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
- Prepare models for tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis.
- Draft tax memoranda and other documents regarding various tax issues.
- Monitor current tax law changes and apply them to the preparation of assigned tax returns.
- Manage the collection and retention of workpapers for assigned clients.
- Partner with SALT professionals to learn the basics of state tax planning and participate in client meetings.
- Assist in the preparation of tax presentations and utilize tax-related software to complete basic returns.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a relevant field, or a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LLM) program.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to follow directions, multi-task, and work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Prior internship or work experience in an accounting or public accounting setting is preferred.
- Leadership experience is preferred.
- Active participation in college-level accounting or finance organizations is preferred.
