About the role#
As a State and Local Tax (SALT) Intern, you will gain hands-on experience by working alongside experienced tax professionals. You will perform basic research, analyze tax issues, and use specialized software to complete tax filings and documents. This role offers an opportunity to apply your educational background while receiving direct coaching to help you build a foundation for your career.
What you'll do#
- Deliver quality tax services by applying an understanding of professional standards.
- Ensure client compliance with authorities and follow all firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Prepare and file voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
- Draft tax memoranda, respond to notices from state taxing authorities, and prepare models for exposure analysis.
- Participate in audit defense, monitor tax law changes, and manage workpaper collection for assigned clients.
- Conduct basic research on federal and state tax issues.
- Partner with experienced professionals to learn state tax planning and assist in preparing client presentations.
- Utilize Caseware, Go Systems, and other tax software to complete returns.
- Establish relationships with team members across Core and Specialized Tax Services.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field, or a Juris Doctorate or Master of Laws program.
- Basic knowledge of accounting and tax theory.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to research and analyze tax topics.
- Ability to multitask, follow instructions, and work both independently and within a team.
- A positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
- Leadership experience, prior accounting internships, or participation in college-level accounting or finance organizations are preferred.
