Tax Intern, State and Local Tax

About the role#

The Tax Intern, State and Local Tax (SALT) role provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in tax research, compliance, and consulting. Working alongside experienced tax professionals, interns will assist in navigating state and local tax laws, preparing filings, and developing technical knowledge in tax methodology and strategy.

What you'll do#

• Complete basic research on federal and state tax issues.
• Draft tax memoranda and other documents related to various tax matters.
• Ensure client compliance with applicable authorities while working to minimize tax and reporting burdens.
• Utilize Caseware, Go Systems, and other tax software to complete basic tax returns.
• Participate in the preparation, filing, and completion of voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
• Assist in drafting responses to notices from state taxing authorities and prepare models for tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis.
• Monitor current tax law changes and apply them to assigned tax returns.
• Partner with SALT professionals to learn state tax planning basics and participate in client meetings.

What you'll need#

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelors or Masters program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a relevant field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to research complex topics.
• Ability to work independently or within a team and handle multiple tasks effectively.
• Leadership experience, prior internship or work experience in an accounting setting, and participation in college-level accounting or finance organizations are preferred.
