About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op, you will work alongside experienced engineers and plant personnel. You will gain hands-on experience with process optimization, automatic process control systems, and operational excellence initiatives. This role focuses on delivering safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations in a chemical plant environment.
What you'll do#
- Help improve chemical processes by working on yield, capacity, and cost improvements, as well as waste and cycle time reduction.
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment and provide recommendations to improve reliability.
- Support the design, installation, and start-up of automatic process control, material handling, and distributed control systems.
- Assist engineers in developing project objectives, scope, and specifications.
- Ensure all projects comply with engineering standards, OSHA, EPA, plant safety, and pressure safety design requirements.
- Perform and check engineering calculations using standard methods.
- Assist with procurement activities, including equipment specifications and bid evaluations.
- Support engineering cost, feasibility, and planning studies.
- Collaborate with production and technical staff on daily troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Aid in the implementation of the Operational Excellence program and support Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor or Master degree program in Mechanical Engineering.
- Completion of at least your sophomore year.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week for a 6-month assignment.
- Willingness to work in a chemical plant environment.
- Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders and move safely within an operating plant.
- Ability to drive to and from the work location.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
