About the role#
As a Space Mechanical Design Engineering Intern, you will work on the mechanical design and development of reactor and power systems, focusing on space applications. You will take projects from early design and manufacturing concepts through to integration and testing. You will also evaluate how systems are deployed across different applications by translating customer operating conditions into technical requirements and concepts of operation. This role provides exposure to both detailed hardware development and the system-level engineering required to deploy nuclear power systems.
What you'll do#
- Design, develop, and test space radiator hardware.
- Develop manufacturing approaches for scaling radiator technology from test coupons to full-scale hardware.
- Contribute to the development and integration of space power conversion systems.
- Own the design and development of power conversion components, including recuperators, primary heat exchangers, and piping.
- Support the overall mechanical integration of space power conversion systems.
- Contribute to reactor mechanical design.
- Perform microgrid analyses and develop reactor deployment assessments.
- Evaluate external markets to identify potential reactor deployment concepts and customer use cases.
- Translate customer applications into technical requirements and expand technoeconomic analyses.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program, entering your Junior or Senior year.
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
- Prior internship experience or significant project team, laboratory, or research experience of at least one year.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Experience in a university club or organization.
- Strong interpersonal, technical communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work cross-departmentally and effectively in a team environment.
Location & details#
- This internship is based on-site at our headquarters in Torrance, California.
- The term is for Summer 2027.
- This is a full-time, paid position.
