About the role#
The American Heart Association is seeking a Data Science Intern to support our Biostatistics team. This role provides hands-on experience in biostatistics, statistical programming, and clinical research methods. You will collaborate with biostatisticians, clinicians, and research partners to advance cardiovascular and population health research. This is a paid internship for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Prepare, clean, validate, and document clinical, registry, and research datasets.
- Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses under the guidance of senior team members.
- Support study design, sample size calculations, and statistical analysis plans.
- Develop and evaluate statistical models, including regression, survival, longitudinal, and mixed-effects models.
- Create reproducible analytical workflows using R, Python, or SAS.
- Perform quality-control reviews of data, code, and analytical outputs.
- Produce tables, figures, and summaries for scientific and business audiences.
- Contribute to literature reviews, manuscripts, and conference materials.
- Participate in team meetings, code reviews, and documentation activities.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Data Science, or a related field.
- Foundational knowledge of research design and statistical methods.
- Experience with statistical programming in R.
- Coursework or experience in regression modeling, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, or clinical trials.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Preferred: Experience with Python or SAS, familiarity with AI/ML/LLM, and experience with version control or reproducible workflows.
Location & details#
- Location: Remote (must reside and work within the United States).
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 8, 2026, to December 11, 2026).
- Schedule: Minimum 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.
- Equipment: Reliable WiFi connection required.
