About the role#
The Utility Forester Intern supports the Forestry team by assisting with field patrols, vegetation assessments, landowner coordination, and contractor inspections. This role focuses on maintaining safe and reliable electric service through effective right-of-way management. You will gain hands-on experience in both field operations and administrative planning.
What you'll do#
- Patrol lines and facilities to assess vegetation conditions and recommend operations.
- Coordinate with landowners to obtain access and manage vegetation activities.
- Investigate and help resolve landowner issues and assist with the Investigative Order process.
- Estimate vegetation management requirements and costs for maintenance and construction.
- Recommend short-term and long-term work plans and best management practices.
- Contact stakeholders to arrange and coordinate right-of-way work plans.
- Administer and schedule forestry communications like mailings and notices.
- Inspect contractors for contract compliance and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide administrative support for district work plans, including tracking timesheets, invoices, and budget reconciliation.
- Assist with storm restoration efforts, which may require travel and overnight stays.
What you'll need#
- Active enrollment in a 4-year degree program in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel for field assignments.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Familiarity with GIS/GPS tools and basic mapping.
- Basic knowledge of contractor oversight and safety practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with forestry field work, vegetation assessment, or right-of-way management is preferred.
