About the role#
This internship focuses on automated reasoning and formal verification. You will join a team developing techniques to ensure the security, reliability, and correctness of cloud services and customer applications. The work involves applying formal methods, constraint solving, and neurosymbolic approaches to areas like cloud infrastructure verification, cryptographic assurance, and AI safety.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement algorithms for automated reasoning, including model checking, static analysis, and program synthesis.
- Apply machine learning and generative AI techniques to improve automated reasoning, such as learning-based heuristics for search.
- Develop reasoning techniques for generative AI and agentic coding systems to provide formal guarantees for model outputs.
- Communicate research findings to diverse audiences.
- Contribute to the scientific community through peer-reviewed publications.
- Use AI-powered tools to speed up research and prototyping, while critically reviewing and validating the outputs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program.
- Ability to relocate to the work location.
- Commitment to a minimum of 40 hours per week for at least 12 weeks.
- Experience programming in Python, C++, Haskell, or Lean.
- Background in mathematical logic, formal verification, SAT/SMT solving, mechanical theorem proving, model checking, or program analysis.
- Demonstrated research depth through publications, thesis work, or equivalent contributions.
- Experience with formal methods toolkits like Z3, Dafny, Isabelle, Rocq, or other verification frameworks.
- Experience applying formal methods to real-world software or systems problems.
- Proficiency in functional or systems languages such as OCaml, Rust, or Scala.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools.

This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship. Positions are available in Seattle, WA; Arlington, VA; Boston, MA; New York, NY; Portland, OR; and Santa Clara, CA.
