About the role#
The Allen County Coroner’s Office offers a part-time paid internship for students and professionals interested in medicolegal death investigation. This role provides practical experience in forensic science, criminal justice, nursing, and related fields. You will work under the direct supervision of the Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner to support daily office operations and investigative procedures.
What you'll do#
- Assist Deputy Coroners with death investigations, including scene responses and documentation of circumstances.
- Collect investigative information from law enforcement, medical personnel, witnesses, and family members.
- Attend autopsies and assist with preparation, documentation, and toxicology specimen processing.
- Manage administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, records maintenance, and inventory.
- Ensure proper chain-of-custody for evidence and maintain confidentiality of all case information.
- Follow all infection-control and biohazard procedures when handling specimens or working at scenes.
- Participate in ongoing training and complete required orientation before performing duties.
What you'll need#
- Minimum age of 18 years and a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Current enrollment in or completion of a program related to Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work around deceased individuals, traumatic injuries, and infectious materials.
- Professionalism when interacting with law enforcement, families, and the public.
- Capability to work independently on routine tasks while knowing when to request supervisory assistance.
Location & details#
- Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Part-time, with hours varying based on operational needs. This includes potential work on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Compensation: 12 USD per hour.
