About the role#
The Safety and Emergency Preparedness Intern will gain hands-on experience in public sector risk management. This role focuses on ensuring the safety of County employees through emergency drill coordination, safety training support, and workplace compliance operations. This is a paid internship for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Partner with the Safety Specialist to conduct monthly audits across all DHS locations to identify hazards.
- Lead the Egress Map Project by updating evacuation routes and assisting with building-wide evacuation drills.
- Collaborate with the training team to facilitate American Red Cross courses, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training.
- Manage documentation for quarterly Floor Safety and Safety Committee meetings, including tracking action items.
- Assist with managing and updating staff information in the Code Red Alert app, which serves as the emergency notification system for DHS.
- Provide administrative and logistical support to the Office Administration team for special projects as needed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student.
- Academic background in Public Health, Human Resources, or Political Science.
- Availability to work up to 29 hours per week.
- A basic understanding of workplace safety procedures.
- Ability to communicate safety protocols clearly and write accurate meeting minutes.
Location & details#
- Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- Work Modality: This is an on-site, in-person position at an assigned ACDHS office.
- Requirement: Interns must maintain an Allegheny County address for the duration of the internship.
