About the role#
The Safety and Emergency Preparedness Intern will gain hands-on experience in public sector risk management. This role focuses on ensuring the safety of County employees through emergency drill coordination, safety audits, and supporting first aid training programs.
What you'll do#
- Partner with the Safety Specialist to conduct monthly audits across all DHS locations to identify hazards.
- Lead the Egress Map Project by updating evacuation routes and assisting with building-wide evacuation drills.
- Collaborate with the training team to facilitate American Red Cross courses for county staff.
- Manage documentation for quarterly Floor Safety and Safety Committee meetings.
- Assist with managing and updating staff information in the Code Red Alert app.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student.
- Ability to work up to 29 hours per week.
- A basic understanding of workplace safety procedures.
- Academic background in Public Health, Human Resources, or Political Science.

- This is an on-site position located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- Interns must maintain an Allegheny County address during the internship.
- This is a paid internship for the Fall 2026 term.
