About the role#
The Nurse Summer Externship Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a nine-week paid opportunity for nursing students entering their final year. This program helps you build clinical competence and confidence as you prepare for your transition into a licensed Registered Nurse role. You will work alongside experienced teams and a dedicated Registered Nurse preceptor to gain hands-on experience in a large academic health system.
What you'll do#
- Provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Assist with admissions, transfers, discharges, and pre- or post-procedure care.
- Perform assigned clinical procedures under appropriate supervision.
- Create and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and teammates.
- Ensure accurate and effective communication of patient information.
- Provide age-appropriate care that meets organizational and unit standards.
- Participate in educational sessions including simulation and didactic learning.
- Shadow in clinical areas of interest.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited ADN or BSN program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028.
- Completion of Med/Surg clinical by Spring 2027.
- Current BCLS or American Red Cross BLS certification.
- Active status on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry by April 16, 2027.
- Active status as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing by May 14, 2027.
- Current AHA or American Red Cross BLS certification by May 14, 2027.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the program.
- Availability for three 12-hour clinical shifts per week plus educational sessions.
- Flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Commitment to professionalism, accountability, and continuous learning.

- Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May 31 to July 31).
- Modality: On-site, full-time.
