    About the role#

    Mechanical Engineer interns at Zipline own significant problems integral to our autonomous logistics system. You will work on projects ranging from early conceptual stages through to field deployment. This role requires a hands-on approach to building prototypes and testing systems to ensure reliability in real-world conditions. You will work cross-functionally with other teams and suppliers to refine designs and meet project goals.

    What you'll do#

    • Develop concepts and evaluate tradeoffs based on product and engineering requirements.
    • Use 2D and 3D CAD tools to design parts and assemblies.
    • Design, build, and run electro-mechanical testers to prove the reliability of critical components.
    • Evaluate designs at a material, element, and fully integrated product level.
    • Root cause failures and develop tests to replicate failure modes.
    • Document your work to provide clarity on key design decisions.
    • Collaborate with other teams and suppliers to review and iterate on designs.

    What you'll need#

    • Completion of at least the second year of Undergraduate studies. Masters and PhD students are also eligible.
    • Experience designing and building multiple mechanical systems outside of the classroom.
    • Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals for structural analysis, part sizing, and component integration.
    • Automation experience using actuators and Raspberry Pi or similar hardware.
    • Proficiency in CAD with a history of designing multiple projects.
    • Ability to work on complex projects involving mechanical, electrical, and software design.
    • A bias for action and the ability to communicate consistently with your team.
    • Majors in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, on-site internship based in South San Francisco, California.
    • The term is for Summer 2027, running from May or June through August or September.
    • This position is paid.
