    About the role#

    Waymo Hardware Systems Architecture defines and validates the electrical, communication network, diagnostic, and cybersecurity architecture for our autonomous vehicles. This team acts as the digital nervous system for our platforms. As an intern, you will work at the intersection of hardware and software co-design to build the infrastructure that keeps our fleet operating safely.

    What you'll do#

    • Design and build Python infrastructure to monitor vehicle communication networks and health in real time.
    • Create automated verification and validation pipelines to evaluate network communication and diagnostic functionality.
    • Develop diagnostic checks and monitoring workflows for in-vehicle network security and cryptographic mechanisms.
    • Use AI-based developer tools and code generation workflows to prototype, test, and scale modular software.
    • Partner with Systems Architects, Network Engineers, and Vehicle Security Engineers to analyze data and troubleshoot integration issues.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Mechanical/Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
    • Strong proficiency in Python for building software infrastructure, automated pipelines, and data analysis tools.
    • High fluency with AI-based tooling and AI code generation for building end-to-end software projects.
    • Solid understanding of communication networks and protocols, such as CAN and CAN-FD.
    • Experience with vehicle or embedded communication networks and diagnostic protocols.
    • Familiarity with Python network tools like cantools and python-can.
    • Basic knowledge of cryptography and network security concepts.
    • Experience building automated test pipelines, such as pytest or CI/CD, or working with hardware-in-the-loop test benches.
    • Hands-on project experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, Formula SAE, EcoCAR, or embedded systems.

    • Term: Summer 2027.
    • Modality: Hybrid.
    • Employment: Full-time.
    • Compensation: $70 per hour for Master's students, $85 per hour for PhD students.
