About the role#
As a Software Engineer Intern on the Onboard Developer Platform team, you will build tools and solutions that help Waymo engineers develop autonomous driving models. You will work on infrastructure that enables faster model training, quality evaluation, and simulation.
What you'll do#
- Learn the details of the current LPM model and the problems it addresses.
- Extend reinforcement learning (RL) infrastructure and run experiments on the RL system.
- Tune parameters and compare your results against existing benchmarks.
- Identify new RL technologies and apply them to Waymo technical challenges.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in software engineering, machine learning, or a related technical field.
- A fundamental understanding of machine learning and reinforcement learning.
- At least 2 years of project experience involving coding and realized achievements.
- Experience with ML or RL projects (3+ years preferred).
- Experience optimizing system infrastructure like simulation, ML/RL, or backend systems (2+ years preferred).
- Familiarity with autonomous driving or related technologies is a plus.

- Location: Mountain View, California.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: Hybrid, on-site.
- Employment: Full-time.
- Compensation: $70 per hour for Master's students, $85 per hour for PhD students.
